Crafty needs

I need to get some Mod Podge. Every time I look at a crafty "how-to" project, it always seems to start with Mod Podge. So I just need to remember to add it to my shopping list the next time I am near a crafty store. Apparently the lack of crafty-ness on my part is due to my lack of having Mod Podge handily available. I knew there was a reason.

Food Adventures

This will come as a shock to most who know me, especially mi padre, but I've recently had a little bit of a yen to eat some crab...as in a bit of a crab feed. I want to spread some newspaper on the dining room table, have bowls of drawn butter, crab and mallets, maybe some rolls and a little coleslaw or corn or other grilled veggies. This might be manifesting because Kevin is addicted to Deadliest Catch right now, and all they seem to do is catch humongous crab in the Bering Sea. My parents have had a crab feed every once in a while, with friends that are like-minded about seafood. The boys and I are not big on seafood, so Mom and Dad are on there own in that culinary delight. But I think sometime, when Kevin and I head north again, maybe we can have a feast with the parents. And I can try some seafood for a one-time random occurrence. We'll have to see how it goes. If nothing else, Kevin will be a happy camper--he is a seafood fanatic.

Merry Christmas to all!

May you have childlike joy and faith this Christmas season, and all the year through. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

"DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old.
"Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
"Papa says, 'If you see it in THE SUN it's so.'
"Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

"VIRGINIA O'HANLON.
"115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET."

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York's Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church.

Reunion

This past weekend I was able to get together with a bunch of friends from the Long Beach days. We spent a weekend laying around, eating, and just catching up. It was a wonderfully lazy weekend, and totally worth the drive to Indio. It was so good to see everyone. And it was a little amusing that we all still keep up thanks to the blogs. Everyone was totally up-to-date. Plans were made for Julie and Carrie's destination weddings (one in Hawaii, another in a to-be determined place), and for another get-together. There will be something in 2012 in this area since Julie will be stationed in Monterey, at the Language Institute, learning Russian for the Utah National Guard. That is very handy for me, since I will be able to see Julie on a more regular basis, and she will be handy on a trip to Russia--one of my top three places to visit. All in all, it was a great time and must be repeated.

We missed you lots, Patty.

Here We Come a'Caroling...

Kevin and I were invited to go caroling with some other friends for an FHE activity yesterday. We gathered at the church and then started to walk the neighborhoods around the church, stopping to sing at random houses that were lit with Christmas decor. We stood before strangers and sang of the Savior's birth. It was an incredible experience, and I was never so focused on what those hymns actually say. I appreciate the opportunity to go caroling; it was an incredibly good time. I hope we can do this again in the years to come.

Glee=Grinch

Glee turned into How the Grinch Who Stole Christmas this week. I love it! How the Grinch Stole Christmas is pretty much my all-time favorite Christmas movie. And one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books. It just brings out my inner kid. Love it, love it, love it.

Decking the Halls

It's time for Christmas decorating! We got a tree and put it up yesterday, and then decorated it and the rest of the house. I love holiday arranging. It's always fun to see what you can come up with.

Christmas Traditions

I love traditions. I like when they form naturally and are not "forced." I enjoy the random little things that are unique to each family or person; and sometimes the weirder the better.

When my brother Jeff and I were about three and four years old, we asked Santa for our own box of Cheerios for Christmas; we were tired of sharing the box for breakfast and each wanted the toy that came with it. So that year there were two boxes of Cheerios under the tree. And every year thereafter, we each got our own box of cereal as part of our Christmas loot. When Chris and Ben joined the group, they also got their own box of cereal. As we got older, we started to get sugar cereal (a rare treat). To this day, there is cereal from Santa under the tree. And when Kevin came along, he also got his own box of cereal. My parents almost didn't do it one year, and the boys and I pitched a fit. A Christmas without cereal is breaking the traditional spirit. It is a small thing, and kind of silly to some, but for the boys and I, it is just a part of the holiday. Much like the tree and stockings, we look forward to it every year.

What are your traditions?

In honor of the season...

I give you this little gem for your listening pleasure. Enjoy!

Leavin' on a jet plane...

OK, maybe I'm not really going on a jet plane, but at the speed Kevin drives, I'm sure it qualifies. We're leaving tomorrow to drive to Eureka for the big Thanksgiving festivities. I'm excited to see my parents and brothers, spend some time at the homestead, and enjoy a Klima Thanksgiving. I didn't go home for Thanksgiving when I lived in Long Beach, and I stayed in the Bay Area last year for Thanksgiving, so I'm really looking forward to my Dad's stuffing and my Mom's bran muffins. Thanksgiving isn't the same without them. But we're heading north and taking the wonder pup with us.

I've been spending time reflecting on all of my many blessings; there are so many things that I have to be thankful for. I've listed some out (in no particular order) and am just thankful for this season that helps me to reflect on all my many blessings.

-Kevin (for all sorts of things to numerous to mention)
-the Gospel and its infinite atonement
-My parents, brothers, and grandma
-All my friends across the country
-My siblings-in-law and their kids--entertainment for hours
-Education
-The opportunity to travel, and see so many things around the world
-The freedom of this country
-The various forms of communication and the technological advances that allow me to stay in touch with friends and family easily
-Maggie the Wonder Pup

There is so much more I could mention, but I don't want to bore you. Needless to say, I am truly blessed. I think Thanksgiving is often overshadowed by Christmas, but at this time let us give thanks for all the blessings, big and small that we have been given.

Friend-iversary

Vanessa and I are kind of odd; I think we'll both admit it. We started, as kind of a joke, celebrating the "anniversary" of our friendship (loosely placed about the time we met). In Long Beach, we signed up for dinner coupons that one receives for birthdays or anniversaries at one of our favorite restaurants, and would go for our "friend-iversary." This year we celebrate five years of friendship, and enjoy the memories. We've lived together, traveled to Thailand together, taken tons of road trips to the Beach House, Eureka, and Utah together, and have even managed to move to the Bay Area together. We are having a little girls weekend filled with some indulgence to celebrate our milestones.

Our husbands are incredibly understanding of our get-togethers, and even get along themselves. We're lucky to have married guys the other likes, and to just enjoy each others friendship. So here's to friendship, and the ties that bind two people together like sisters.

And a special shout-out to Wendy, who hooked us up when we were looking for roommates. We're glad we could be one of your success stories.

Triple Threat

It happend, and I have photographic proof. There was an evening out involving myself, Katy, and Lisa. Except it wasn't strictly girls. It turned out to be a triple date, which is even better, to my way of thinking. Handsome men and amusing girl time. The evening was great fun and full of laughter. We must do it again soon. Plus, Katy, you and you-know-who should come around more often! I am willing to be the partner in crime whenever you need one...

Loved and adored

Yesterday I was checking in on my friends blogs, and found this little gem. It feels nice to be so loved...and wanted. To be fair, Kevin does not keep me hostage from my friends. He has his guys nights, and I have my girls nights; although we do have crossover events. I have to say, in my own defense, I've done a pretty good job of keeping my friend life balanced since Kevin came along. I don't think I fell too deep into the dating or married abyss.

But, my public is calling, and I must answer their cries. Girls night coming soon.

Grandma Tour 2010

This past weekend Kevin and I embarked on a visit to see my Grandma in Chico. While we were there, we painted her bedroom (Grandma has gotten into trouble in the past painting walls on her own: she is NOT allowed on ladders), since she wanted it done and could not do it herself. But best of all, Grandma FINALLY got to meet Maggie, and they hit it off like a charm. Maggie likes to jump onto Grandma's lap, and if she had the footrest up, then Maggie would usually curl up there. But they enjoyed each other, and Maggie is looking forward to going back to Grandma's house. She is a spoiled puppy. But it was a good visit; it is always fun to see Grandma!

Suddenly sporty

I enjoy sports; I prefer to play than to watch, usually, but I love attending a live game and being part of the crowd and sharing the experience is electrifying and entertaining. So it was a little surprising to me that I got so involved in the MLB playoffs and the subsequent World Series. I watched every game, had lots to say at work the next day and with the people at church. If someone asks, I am a Giants fan. I grew up in NorCal and they are the team for the area. I'm not as committed as, say, a Red Sox fan is, but I like to think that in my own little way, I've supported the Giants through the years. So congrats to the Giants on winning the World Series--way to bring the win to the Bay! And I think this little video helped the Giants on their way. Enjoy!

Car wash

I am not a big car-washer. I never have been, and I'm pretty sure this drives Kevin nuts. I grew up in one of the rainiest areas of the state, if not the country, and what was the point of car washing? If you wash it, it rains, if you don't wash it, it still rains. Either way, your car is always pretty clean looking (if you are doing just basic city driving). Here, however, there isn't a great deal of rain. And so my car can get pretty dirty. But I don't really care (hence the Kevin being driven nuts part). He's actually come and traded cars with me at work just so mine could be washed. A nice gesture, yes, but I'm pretty sure it was driven (ha ha) more by the fact that he was tired of seeing my dusty little Peanut in the driveway next to his shiny car. But as luck would have it; it rained for a couple days, and so my car got washed.

Sad to say good-bye

I have had the same bathroom rugs since I moved away from home (seven years ago) and they just started to fall apart about a month ago. Since then, I've been on the lookout for new ones that go with my existing decor. I've checked all the usual and not so usual places, but there was nothing to be found in the color I needed. I finally found some that were close, and OK, but still, the perfectionist in me is not quite satisfied. I am disheartened that the original rugs fell apart to a degree that I recognize as ridiculous, but they coordinated perfectly. I know that stuff falls apart eventually, and that these are fairly minor in the scheme of what needs to be replaced. But I like my stuff, and I like it to stay the way it is. Hopefully these new rugs will work out; color-wise and in longevity.

Busy Weekends Full of Fun

This past weekend Kevin and I snuck down to SoCal for a variety of events. My brother, Chris, came down from Eureka and road tripped with us the rest of the way to LA. We spent a day with the brothers on Friday, went to Disneyland on Saturday (Kevin has never been to California Adventure, and only went to D-land once when he was 13--tragedy!), celebrated Jeff's book signing event, and then saw Vanessa's parents give their homecoming talk (they just returned from a mission in Ecuador) and spent some time with her family. Then we hopped in the car and headed north again. Chris is always an entertaining car companion, and it was exciting to share the happiest place on earth, one of my favorite places, with Kevin. As an added bonus, some of our friends from the Bay Area were also at Disneyland that same day, and we met up with them that evening. Good times were had by all.

Lights

There are only two of us in the household, but somehow, every single light seems to get turned on throughout the course of the evening. The office light stays on, all three living room lights are on, the dining room light is on, the kitchen light, the light in the hallway; they are all on for one reason or another. Why don't they get turned off behind us? I go around before going to bed and wonder that every night. For two people, there is a lot of wattage being spread across our house. I swear there is a light monster out there who turns on the lights for us and just lets them sit. That is the only explanation. I don't understand how two adults can leave so many lights burning.

Maggie's First Ticket

We were gone from the house all day on Saturday, and had to leave Maggie outside. Apparently she did nothing but bark while we were gone, because we came home at 11 PM, and found a little note from animal control, telling us to get her barking under control. The neighbors did not appreciate her twilight bark, a la 101 Dalmations. So we sat down and had a little talk with her. Hopefully next time she'll behave herself and won't earn another ticket while we are gone for a day (or more).

Girlfriends

I have said many times that the Lord gave me brothers, but I have managed to find my sisters in a variety of places. I have several girlfriends scattered across the country, from AZ to DC to Utah, to the LBC, NorCal, in San Jose, and right here in the East Bay, that help me through times of trial, celebrate with me, and generally set me straight when I need it (thank you Carrie, you are especially good at that). I sit here tonight thinking of these remarkable women and the fun times we've had together and the different paths our lives have diverged on. But I know I could call them and visit them, and our friendships remain. I am feeling a great deal of love tonight for the wonderful ladies that I have been blessed to know and love. So thanks for your friendship and everything else. It truly means the world to me.

Girls Night

Kevin is camping with the Scouts, so Maggie and I settled in for a night of of indulgence (although all other offers were appreciated!). We had some Chinese for dinner, watched a little Grey's Anatomy and other girly TV, and had a little pampering session. I had a facial and exfoliation, while Maggie had a deep conditioning session. She is much softer and fluffier now. But it was a very relaxing evening of girly sloth. I love those nights.

Squirrel!

There is a squirrel that hangs out in our backyard. Every time Maggie sees him, she goes nuts. She chases him around the yard, bounding and leaping over bushes and plants, crossing distances in the air I didn't think a dog that size could do. Or should be able to do. But that stupid squirrel just runs around the edge of the fence and jumps along the trees, chittering at her; which just makes her more frustrated. He definitely knows how to mock. But every time I see her go after that squirrel, all I think of is Doug, from Pixar's UP. Squirrel! It must be a dog thing.

Misinformation

The subtitle of my blog promises "exciting updates from the other end of the state." I am sorry inform you all that I am apparently unable to keep that promise. I have no exciting updates. And no expectation of anything exciting in the next few days. Not even any fun conversations to stick up here. I'm boring. I apologize.

A little clarification

A little correction. I do want to tour the Winchester House. I think it has an interesting story and background, and that the architecture is unique, to say the least. But it is NOT a haunted house. Mrs. Winchester thought that SHE was haunted, but really, she was just crazy. As a result, the house is kind of crazy. Nevertheless, I do want to take a tour of the house. It has been on my list of things to do for a very long time. And I still want to find a REAL haunted house/building and tour that.

Happy Birthday Kevin!

Happy Birthday to my very fabulous husband, Kevin. He is always up for an adventure, and will go along with an idea. He supports me and helps me, and brings me flowers when I've had a bad day, or for no particular reason. Best of all, he knows I'm addicted to the dried mangos at Costco, and always manages to pick up a couple bags for me when he is there. You are a great gardener, and a handy guy to have around the house for painting, hanging stuff, bugs, and so forth. These last few months of being married to you have been pretty fantastic and thanks for being the wonderful guy that is you. I love you lots and lots! Happy Birthday and enjoy the next wonderful year.

Haunted Houses

I am interested in ghost stories. I always have been. The stories that there is something that "plays the piano" for all the guests after they have gone to bed, shuts doors, opens windows, moves furniture, stuff like that. I would love to go on a tour of a haunted building and see what there is to see. I grew up in an area that is full of historic houses and has lots of great stories. I need to find a place that has a tour, and is appropriately scary. None of this Haunted Castle at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk stuff. My dad has built better when I was a kid for the church Halloween party. No, I need a real, honest-to-goodness haunted building or haunted house. There has to be one in the Bay Area. And the Winchester House doesn't count. It isn't haunted; it's just weird.

Happy Birthday Jeff!

Kerry, myself, and the birthday boy (Jeff)
Happy Birthday to my brother, Jeff! He is twenty-nine today. In that time period he has met a beautiful and fabulous girl named Kerry whom we all love as a member of the Klima/Davis clan, become a college graduate, a published author, and has turned into a pretty responsible adult. Jeff is one of my biggest defenders. He has my back no matter what and is a brother that any girl can be proud to have. We were best friends growing up (even if I did pull his hair when he came home from the hospital), and we remain friends now. So happy birthday Jeff! You are the best of brothers and I love you lots.

Labor Day Weekend

We went to the Beach House for Labor Day Weekend. And all we did was sit in the living room, watch TV, read books, and walk on the beach with Maggie. There was a bonfire on Saturday night, with Kevin's brothers coming down with their girlfriends. We hung out and talked, stayed up way too late, and had lots of fun. The entire weekend was perfect, and relaxing. I love lazy weekends. We also took lots of photos, but they were all of Maggie. It was her first trip to the beach. : )

Go Rivercats!

Robert is addicted to baseball. So Kevin and I drove up to West Sac last week to watch the Sacramento Rivercats in their last home game of the season with the Penrods. It was a great game, with the Rivercats winning against the Fresno Grizzlies 10-3, fireworks at the end of the night, and beautiful weather to top it all off. It was Robert's first baseball game, and he loved it; he wanted to go down and play first base, and kept trying to emulate the pitcher. His baby brother, Josh, could care less. But Robert got to meet Digger, the Rivercat mascot, and got his autograph. It was pretty entertaining. A good time was had by all.

An Afternoon with Robert

We recently absconded with our nephew Robert for a little afternoon fun. We went to the park, played baseball, loaded him with french fries and chicken fingers for dinner, and topped it off with some donuts. After that, we took him back and gave him to his parents. It is fun to spoil the kids a little. And then not have to be the ones who put them to bed.

Harley Goat Farm...with nephews

On Saturday we headed to Pescadero for a tour of the Harley Goat Farm. It is a beautiful town near Santa Cruz, and the farm was amazing. We took two of our nephews for a little fun, and made through a two-hour tour, and a three-hour round-trip drive with a two-year old and a one-year old. A stop for a picnic lunch and some playground fun helped a great deal. But it was a great day, and full of fun facts, amazing cheese, and some incredible olive oil. A return to the farm is a must.

Crafty

You may remember this post, about how I was tempted by DIY projects, but scared by past failures. Well, I decided to give it a go, and start with something relatively simple. I have always been a fan of French memory boards, but the ones I like are kind of expensive, and the cheaper ones are really ugly, and not my style at all. So, I found a sale on cork boards and fabric, got some ribbon, and went to town with a staple gun. I did it while watching the SYTYCD finale. And I love it. It gives me the confidence for some more DIY projects. Hopefully without the WTF at the end of it.

What I started with: cork board, fabric, and quilt batting.

Crazy Weekend

This past weekend, we went to Eureka to visit the family. The weekend was fun, relaxing, and thoroughly enjoyable. Maggie behaved herself on the trip up, and mostly while we were in Eureka. Altogether, it was a very delightful time. Then came the trip home. Kevin's car has been known to not start when you insert the key. Something about the wheels locking and the ignition not connecting, etc. etc. I'm not up on car-speak. But we stopped in Santa Rosa to visit Dan, Kevin's brother. We got in the car, and nothing. There was no turning the car on. At 10 PM, Kevin is jacking up the car, trying to manually unlock everything, to no avail. We go back to Dan's apartment, and wait for an hour. Then Kevin tries again. Nothing. 12:30 comes around, and Kevin tries one last time. It is an hour and a half to home, and we both have work the next morning. Nothing. So, we wind up spending the night in Santa Rosa (thanks Dan, for your bed!), call AAA bright and early, get towed to the dealership, where they investigate the car. They tell us it can be fixed, and that they have the part. $416 and a lot of frustration later, we are on our way by 3:30 PM. Only to hit construction and traffic. Just another cherry on the frustration sundae.

But the day was saved by the plans we had made earlier the previous week. Kevin had some guys coming over for games, and I had Vanessa coming up for a trip to Costco (we have a Costco tradition kind of established).

There are some good times, and some good stories. And in some instances, both.

Meet Maggie

Meet Maggie! She is our very adorable and loving three year old poodle (with a little bichon frise thrown in for good measure). We adopted her from the local animal shelter, and she is just a love. I think we are going to have fun together.

Changing the world

I've been inspired by these stories that I read today. I would definitely like to participate in an activity such as this. Would anyone care to join in their own city? I don't think you need to leave anything monetary, or spend a great deal of money. Sometimes a note is the greatest kindness of all. If we chance to see a frown, maybe we can make a person smile, instead. And that can make a great day for us.

My Famous Brother

Jeff was on KTLA Channel 5 this morning, talking about his book and giving some "clean-up" tips. He was great, and completely natural, if I do say so myself. Check out his clip here; it is about 5 minutes long and totally worth your time. And if you haven't purchased the book yet, you can get here, or at a Barnes and Noble near you (just look in the social science section). He has a couple more TV appearances coming up in San Diego, so look for more proud sister posts. Coming to a blog near you!

School Fire

Most of you know my friend, Vanessa. She is a second and third-grade bilingual teacher at Trace Elementary in San Jose. On Monday morning, her school burned down. Sixteen classrooms, the school library, and the computer learning center (which had at least 30 laptops/computers in it), were destroyed. Vanessa's classroom was one of those destroyed. She lost all the books, DVDs, the skillet and popcorn popper she had brought in for class parties and science projects, BYU memorabilia, study abroad photos, maps, and other odds and ends. The school has insurance, but not all of the personal items are covered, if any. So Vanessa and the other teachers will have to re-build their classrooms, one book at a time. There are so many things each teacher needs, but as Vanessa is near and dear to my heart, I'm mostly worried about her. So, if anyone feels that they can or have the ability to donate books, educationally appropriate DVDs (such as Planet Earth and Blue Planet), or gift cards to Target or Amazon, that would be much appreciated. I am willing to collect items and deliver them to Vanessa, but if you know where she lives, you can also send stuff directly to her, or to her husband's work place. That address is:

Robb Thurmond
Trace Elementary School
46269 Warm Springs Blvd.
Fremont, CA 94539

I've seen how stressful the beginning of school is for Vanessa, and I'm sure it is the same for all teachers. This only makes it more stressful for her, and the other teachers and students affected by the school fire. So anything that can be done to help rebuild the classroom would be much appreciated. And it is tax-deductible!

How Puffy the Cigarette Saved the 4th of July

I spent the 4th of July at the family Beach House in Aptos, CA., where legal fireworks are not allowed. Oh, no. Everyone here goes for the illegal ones, from places like Nevada. Fly up and explode in the sky; the bigger the better. Professional shows have nothing on the 3 hour-plus Seacliff Beach extravaganza. Every five minutes, someone has a grand finale. You just don't know where to turn your head to look.

Vanessa and Robb joined my family for the holiday. Vanessa and I may or may not have purchased a bunch of illegal fireworks in Nevada. And we may or may not have brought them to the Beach House and set them off on the beach. Unfortunately, the lighter we had ceased to work and we could not get the pundts to light. My brother, Chris, offered a solution, and used his cig to light the fireworks. It was quite comical, and one of the funniest things I've seen in a while. I guess Boy Scouts do teach you to be prepared. But thanks to Puffy (as Dad calls Chris), we were able to light the fireworks to properly celebrate the birth of our nation.

Happy Birthday, America.

3-D

Kevin and I saw Toy Story 3 tonight. It was really good, and a nice way to end the "series." But while we were at the theater and looking at the posters, watching the previews, everything is coming out in 3-D. Why? Why do we need special glasses to watch a movie? How does this improve the experience? Do they use this as just another excuse to charge me more money for the "pleasure" of sitting in a crowded theater? I don't need everything in 3-D. I'm perfectly fine with 2-D. Just charge me less money and let me see a regular, normal movie.

Shameless Promotion

So by now you all know that my brother, Jeff, wrote a book (available on Amazon and in the social science section of your local bookstore). The book garnered him an interview with the Orange County Register, which is available in the printed format, but I've also linked it here for your reading pleasure. I'm a shameless promoter for him, but what can I say? He's my brother, I love him, and I'm proud of him. So, buy the book if you haven't already. I've read it, and call it good. Although, in some places I do shake my head at him. But what the heck. Help a poor boy make a living!

My favorite things

We received many wonderful and generous gifts from family and friends for our wedding. But one of the things that gets the most use (by me, anyway) is the popcorn popper from my cousin, Sara. I have a love obsession with this item. I have been going through popcorn kernels at an alarming rate, and recently purchased the Costco-sized container of kernels from Costco. Kevin predicts that I will go through it within the month. I deny it, but it does have that potential, quite honestly. I've had popcorn for lunch, popcorn for dinner, and sometimes just as a snack while watching TV. I think I need a twelve-step program.

"Hi, my name is Shaine, and I am addicted to popcorn."

To Read or Not to Read

When I was seven, I read all the Nancy Drew books. I devoured them, going through one or two books a day. I read and re-read most of them over the years. I had my favorites, and my not-so favorites. They are sitting in a box at my parents house, somewhere. I think waiting for future generations of Nancy Drew lovers to find and devour them as I did. I am getting nostalgic for the books I enjoyed when I was younger. I've re-read some of the stuff from high school, like Cannery Row and To Kill a Mockingbird. Those were some of my favorites. But I can't seem to pick up the Nancy Drew books. I'm almost afraid they won't be as good as my pre-teen mind remembers. I don't want to ruin what are great memories of a series of books by the higher expectations of my now-adult mind. But maybe some things are worth the risk. I might have to see if the library has a copy of the Mystery of the Old Clock.

It's Here, It's Here!

I know I've been talking about this for a while now, but in my defense, it is pretty exciting news. MY BROTHER'S BOOK IS OUT!!!!! I have my copy. It was waiting for me in the mail the other day. You can get it from Amazon, or from a bookstore near you. It is on shelves and available for order. It is funny and interesting. Not to mention it is full of stuff that I remember hearing about and some crazy stuff I didn't. Most of it's true, a lot of it is embellished, and I'm pretty sure there is some made up stuff in there (the author refuses to confirm or deny). But it is cool to read something that my brother wrote; that he achieved his goals and put some hard work and dedication into the process. So help a guy with his dream and BUY HIS BOOK. It's pretty entertaining and I'll do what I can to have the author sign it.

Vocabulary

I seem to pick up words and phrases from the people I associate with the most. And they seem to become an indelible part of my vocabulary. Back in the LBC days, I picked up "if it's not a good time, it's a good story" from the Black sisters. Wendy contributed "hold please" and "keyword" to my phraseology. It was recently brought to my attention that I said good-bye to some people with the phrase "peace out homies" which seems to be an homage of sorts to Patty. Vanessa has given me "good glory" and I have Carrie to thank for my response of "sure" to some statements directed towards me. I notice that when with Katy and Lisa, I say "wow" a whole lot more. Maybe they just surprise me a great deal. I haven't noticed that I picked anything up from Kevin. Maybe that's because I talk enough for the both of us. However you look at it, I'm influenced by the people around me. I'm just lucky they are fabulous and didn't have any bad habits that I would have absorbed.

Gettin' Crafty

My parents are very creative people. They have an innate ability to create something out of nothing, to look at a piece of junk and say "I can do something with that," and have it turn out beautifully. I did not inherit that talent. I regret that more than I can say, since I really enjoy the results of aforementioned creative process. I think I am just too literal. But lately I have gotten caught up in all these crafty blogs and think "I can do that." Then I remember all my crafty disasters of the past, and think that maybe I should just stay far, far, away from glue guns and mod podge, and decoupoge. But the urge to create is just getting too strong for me to ignore. Maybe I should start out small. I've traveled to foreign countries; surely I should be able to handle Michaels. There must be something out there that I can do.

Mormon Helping Hands

Saturday, May 8th, was "Mormon Helping Hands" day throughout California. Stakes across the state participated in volunteer efforts to clean up our local parks. The Livermore stake was in charge of cleaning up certain sections of the Arroyo. We hauled deadfall out of the riverbed, picked up trash, spread mulch, and planted some plants. It was a good day, a beautiful day, and we had lots of fun.

The crowd gathers in the AM to begin a day of work.
Hard at work spreading mulch along the Arroyo bike path.
City Council member reading a proclamation from the City of Livermore to the stake, commending us for our service.
Ready to work in our kickin' volunteer gear.
The lovely ladies I worked with for the day. We spread about a mile of mulch along a bike trail. It looks AWESOME!

The Dirty Thirties Have Arrived

Yesterday was my birthday (thanks for all the good-wishes, btw) and it was, sincerely, one of the most perfect birthdays I have EVER had. And for a girl whose birthday is her favorite holiday, I can guarantee that is saying something. My day started with Kevin getting up early to prepare breakfast for me. Waffles, bacon, apple juice, and a pretty red rose started off my day.

One of my coworkers gave me some roses, another some tulips, and Kevin surprised me at lunch with some more flowers. We had a little surprise birthday celebration potluck at work, and it was very yummy. I received numerous texts and birthday messages from friends and family, which was awesome. After work I had an appointment in Pleasanton, and Kevin had a surprise up his sleeve. When I came home, the table was set with the good linens and our fancy china and crystal, and he had cooked a full-on traditional Italian dinner for me (us). It involved all four courses, with birthday cake for dessert. In addition, Kevin had placed flowers throughout the house. Roses and lilies (my favorite), and bunches of tulips. The house looked beautiful, the food tasted divine, and I felt incredibly loved, special, and cared for.
After dinner, it was time for presents. Can I brag a little more? Kevin gave me some cool things, but my absolute favorite was the complete series of the West Wing. It is my favorite TV show of all time, and I've contemplated buying it in the past, but have always stopped myself. Now I won't have to record the re-runs that come on Bravo at 5 and 6 AM and clutter up the DVR anymore. I love it. I am fortunate to be married to such a thoughtful man who does such amazing things for me. He pays attention to my likes and dislikes, and shows he loves me in such incredible, thoughtful ways. It was the most perfect birthday, ever. I cannot think of a better way to welcome my 30s, and look forward to the celebrations coming throughout the month.

Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there. But a special shout-out to my own wonderful mother. I love you tons, and cannot imagine my life without you in it. You manage to help me in my most difficult times from five hours away, check in with the "away kids" every week, and make sure we all know that we are loved. Our family is spread across the state, but you keep us all close because you ensure that we are all connected. We know what's up with everybody, because you are the center of it all. Our family is tight and has lots of fun together, and it is pretty much because of you. You see the worst situations any kid can be in, and you have an absolute belief in the goodness of the human spirit. You epitomize "Charity Never Faileth," even if you feel like you do not do enough. You do enough for ten lifetimes, and I am so proud to be your daughter. Thank you for your example, for your care, and for loving me as you do. I want to be just like you when I grow up. I love you Mom. And I miss you lots.
