Holiday Memories

I'm pretty bad about downloading pictures from my camera, but I finally did it. Here are some of my favorite photos from the holiday season. Enjoy!

The Klima kids, in age order (I'm the oldest, FYI)
Graduates of Klima University. We all got matching shirts for Christmas...kind of in lieu of new pj's. I like the t-shirt idea better.
My brother Chris spent Thanksgiving day dressed as a country gentleman and taking the dog for a walk. No joke, he took the dog to the park, and played with her for about an hour, dressed like this.

It really is the most wonderful time of the year!

You know it's a good Christmas when your whole family is together, everyone is getting along, and, when you open presents, there are many shoes and purses under the tree for you. As part of my Christmas haul, my parents gave me two purses and two pairs of shoes (each of which they saw me lusting after and denying due to budgetary contraints). I am resorting to a mild case of materialism here, because you all know how much I love my shoes and bags, and finding those particular items under the Christmas tree was the best thing ever. I'll try and post pictures later...we had a great time hanging out, watching movies, playing games, and just being.

I hope you all had an equally merry Christmas, and are looking forward to the prospects of the New Year. I am personally excited for 2009 and all the possibilities it affords. So, Merry Christmas to all, and to all, a good night.

Cinematic Appreciation

I am having a movie educational week. I recently viewed Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail (I've seen clips, but never the whole thing) and just watched Monty Python's Life of Bryan. Both are amazingly funny. I think it is the english accent that makes it so. I'm enjoying the randomness of the movies. My brother's have been Monty Python fans forever and I have only recently started appreciating the humor of this genre. This is startlingly appropriate for Christmas, I think. The beginning of the movie (when Bryan is born and the wise men come to visit and mistake him for the baby Jesus) has to be my favorite part. But really, the whole move is pretty freaking funny.

On my way!

Everything is coming together...and all at the last minute. The funding I needed for school is working out, I'm finally finding potential roommates for the big move, and I am feeling confident and comfortable about all this once again. I had a few panicky moments about things not working out, but I should have had more faith and just trusted that it was all going to work out. But look out...San Jose, here I come!

'Tis the season!

You know it's Christmas when you here the Christmas Shoe Song on the radio right after a Fall Out Boy song. This was my first time hearing it this year, and while I find the the song ridiculous and extremly cheesy, it gave me a nice glow thinking about Patty and Wendy and their continued mocking of the song. As always, the best part is the children's choir at the end, bringing the cheese factor up to an all time high.

Ahhh...the different types of media

My brother, Chris, had to give a presentation on a form of media in his Media class at Humboldt State University (HSU). I decided to type it here, because honestly it is the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. Trust Chris to think outside the box on this one. WARNING: Pretty long (but funny!) post below.

BLOG SPOT WHILE YOU DROP LOGS ON THE POT

A bizarre form of media is the walls, tile, grout, tissue dispensers and the very toilet itself, of a public bathroom.

The wall of the Men's room on the third floor of the HSU library is an active blog spot, with a flurry of ideas, opinions and messages being exchanged. The messages conveyed espouse the views of people either doing their business, or people who like the free and open forum of bathrooms.

Some of the messages conveyed are simply 'tags,' a pseudonym for a graffiti artist to note to patrons of the restroom that they have been there.

Other topics include political messages, such as lambasting President Bush as being the "spawn of Satan." Responses to these messages are not uncommon. Some people like to censor the writings of others, some choose to highlight messages they find particularly poignant or moving.

Still others choose to express philosophical life views. One such message proclaimed "You are not a unique and beautiful snowflake." To which one response was, "Yes I am."

One other style of message is the proclamation of the bizarre religious symbolism. Some are straightforward, others baffling (show photo of Star of David with Bible verse written inside).

Regardless of the message, the media on which it is conveyed would certainly lessen the impact, as the reading of these messages is peripheral to the larger task beign performed by the receptor. The message is also lessened bcause the media causes one to beg the question, "Who wrote this, and why on a bathroom wall?" Based on the persons personal comfort and experiences with public restrooms, would determine the tone in which these messages are received. Perhaps if going to the restroom is a religious experience for you, you might be more receptive to the bizarre Judeo imagery. If you feel funny, you may be more receptive to the humorous passages. If it is a time of contemplation for you, the philosophical writings might be more meaningful to you.

I suppose a theologist might find that unusual bursts of praise for a deity are not uncommon, even when drawing the Star of David on the lavatory wall. A sociaologist might like to know how common the messages are and what profile of people leave them there, and how they are received by the public. An archeologist might find this bathroom after our civilization is lost and assume that it was a major form of communication.

Regardless, even a bathroom wall is a form of media.

Apparently everyone else in the class focused on more traditional forms of media, such as magazines and newspapers. What cracks me up the most is that this is the men's room...I would have expected more crude and less thought provoking. Maybe only in Humboldt County are the roles reversed.

Tactless Questions or Invasion of Privacy?

Tonight was the Christmas party at my parents ward, so I went. This is the ward I grew up in, so I know a number of these people, and they have known me forever, plus they keep tabs on me through my parents. So I'm hanging out, chatting, and people are wondering what I'm doing. I fill them in on my upcoming school situation and what I'm planning on doing there. Then comes THE question..."so, are you dating anybody?" Or the subtle looks to my left hand (still devoid of any ring on the meaningful finger) and then the follow-up questions about my social life, and what was I doing in LA? There must have been plenty of singles there. This is enough to make me wish I didn't go to the family ward functions. Apparently I am a pitiable anomaly.

Happy Holidays!

We don't have a place in the garage for all the holiday decorations. One half of a two-car garage is devoted to the Halloween decorations, and the adjoining shed is dedicated to Christmas. My parents are crazy about their decorations for the holidays. Since it is officially December we are pulling out the Christmas decorations and will start the transformation to "Santa's Holiday House" this week. I will also start the baking tomorrow, making loads of gingerbread men and other sugar cookies to pass out and keep on hand. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...and I love it!

Desperation

My levels of boredom have reached new limits. I have offered to paint my dad's future office and get all the prep work done on it. I hate painting. I hate prep work for painting. This is an example of how desperate I am to have something to do with my day. I can only organize so many cupboards, vaccum so many floors, and wash so many dishes. Eventually, even the dog doesn't want to go for a walk. My new last resort...painting the room. I need to get out of here and start school. I need a change of pace.

Persecution

I've been reading the different articles that people have been writing since Prop 8 passed, about why the LDS church deserves to be persecuted because of their role in the campaign and such. I was looking around on-line and found this clip, showing the demonstrators and picketers outside the LA and Oakland temples, and the various signs and slogans they are employing. I have to say, this hurts my heart. It makes me want to be in LA right now so that I can go to the temple and do a session a day or something. I got to thinking that what we are facing right now in California is, in a sense, what the early Saints faced with prosecutions and mobbing out in Missouri and such--more 2008 than 1830s, but still. We may not be burned out of our homes, or physically harmed, but we are being persecuted for our belief's and our rights. I wish my heart was not so heavy, and that I felt better about the state of my state.

Signs of the times?

I just learned that my brother and his girlfriend are being evacuated because of the fires down in Southern California. Along with this, when I opened the newspaper this morning, there was a photo of the LAPD in riot gear standing on the lawn of the LA Temple because of the protesters sitting on the wall. There is all sorts of stuff happening across the nation, but a great deal of contension and problems seems centered here in California. I worry over my family and friends being in harms way. Hopefully things will quiet down and the fires will be controlled. I'm nowhere near ready for things to get worse.

Progress

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have just registered for my first semester's classes at San Jose State University. This may seem trivial and small to some, but as I haven't had much going on lately, this is big news. Plus, it is one more step in establishing myself down in SJ and getting things together. Now, I just need to find a place to live and a paying internship. If I can manage that, I'll be sitting pretty. I'm really quite excited to go back to school. The challenge, the opportunity to learn, and do research...it thrills me. I'm sure I'll be full of complaints later, but for now, I'm excited. Look Mom, I'm a real student again!

The Fates Conspire Against Me!

I am apparently cursed by fate. Allow me to give you the rundown. First, on Monday morning, I got a flu shot. By that evening, I had flu symptoms. I am just now beginning to feel better. I had a fever, cough, sore throat, achy joints, and a headache. The flu shot gave me the flu! Second, I had an appointment with the branch president this evening. Even though I didn't feel well, I decided to keep it. This appointment was to make up for the appointment he missed a couple weeks ago. Guess what...I was stood up tonight as well. I'm done. I will meet him before church or after church, but I am done with driving 10 miles to the church building in order to meet with him. I'm seriously annoyed. By the time he gets around to meeting with me, I'll already be in San Jose. We are talking about a twig...maybe 40 active members total. I have been in huge wards where the bishop never forgot an appointment with me once, let alone twice! Third, I have to go back to the dentist on Thursday afternoon for round two of my oral repairs. This time will be more painful, and possibly longer in duration, than the previous visit. Again, I am annoyed because if the dentist had done the root canal right the first time, I wouldn't be in this mess now. I cannot wait for what fate has in store for me next. Hopefully something good, but knowing my luck, it just won't happen.

Ah, Friends

I know this is schmaltzy, but I have to give a shout out to my friend Cheryl. I've known this girl forever (at least, since I lived in Sacramento) and she is one of my best friends in the world. I had a little chat with her yesterday, and she gave me great advice and insight. I won't go into detail, but suffice it to say, there was a whole lot of stuff I needed to hear. She and her husband might have moved to South Carolina, taking their adorable baby (my "nephew") with them, but our friendship persists despite the distance. Thank you, Cheryl, for being the incredible, awesome, spectacular you. Love you girl!

Marching Lumberjacks

I'll admit to not having very strong feelings about Humboldt State (HSU), the first of my collegiate alma maters. I pretty much did my time there until I could go to Sacramento for the fun part of my education. While I am hanging out in Humboldt County, however, I thought I owed it to HSU to attend a football game. Admittedly, the football team sucks. They lose more than they win, and it's usually not that exciting to watch. However, the school band, the Marching Lumberjacks, are worth the price of admission any day of the week to a game. They are a zany group who have more fun than talent in some areas, but they practice to be as bad as they are. I could watch their half-time shows forever. I've given you a sample of said zanieness below. Enjoy!

Part I

I know, I know, everyone is dying to hear about my oral adventures at the dentist. I myself wouldn't say anything, but I know I have a devoted following who is anxious to hear every word about my progress. On top of that, I'm frustrated by my own mouth and its issues. I went to the endodontist yesterday to have my root canal done over, and in the process, discovered that my teeth are more stubborn than I am (which is saying something). Apparently, everything is just hard for the dentist to get at, so I have to go back at least two more times in order for him to get all the way down and to re-fill the various roots. I am not the biggest fan of the dentist, and after this is all over, am seriously considering boycotting it until some point in the far future. Until then, I remain a little sore and a lot annoyed.

Replaced

I know it is really beyond the point, but I feel kind of bittersweet at seeing my name removed from the Bostonian Manor blog. I know that I am gone and working my own thing, but I had such a good time being part of that house. Now my leaving feels officially official. I'm being kind of whiny and maudlin, but I can't help it...I'm kind of a drama queen, as everyone very well knows. But I miss the girls, and sometimes wish things could stay the same. On the other hand, I'm excited for the new adventures San Jose will bring. I'm a mess. I'm going to shut up now.

Oral Fixations

I had to have a root canal about 10 years ago, and recently found out that the dentist filled it in short. Subsequently, I now have an infection in that root and must go to an endodentist to have it taken care of. Basically they have to cut a hole in my crown and try to dig the infection out, or peel back the gum and then dig away. Either way, it is uncomfortable for me. I will be give a local anesthetic (I might prefer to be put under entirely. I REALLY hate people working in my mouth) and the procedure will take about two hours, during which my mouth must remain open the ENTIRE time. All this fun and excitement happens on Friday morning, bright and early. I am planning on getting no sleep Thursday night so I can plug in my ipod and pretty much zone out on Friday during the procedure. Wish me luck.

The rain has arrived

It is officially the rainy season. A good-size storm blew in last night, and the rain has been falling throughout the day. I am now prepared to be wet for the next couple of months. Usually when the rain starts falling, it is pretty much a daily occurance, especially as it gets deeper into the fall/winter months. This is really my favorite time of the year. I get to break out the cute sweaters, scraves, hats, and winter shoes. Exciting.

Haunted House

I'll be the first to admit I'm kind of a snob when it comes to Halloween and all things scary and spook-tacular. For those who know me, my dad is pretty much a Halloween officianado and always decorates the house for the holiday in some scary manner or another. Tonight we took a family field trip to a house in the middle of nowhere that is turned into a haunted house open to the public. The house was pretty interesting, the atmosphere intriguing, but the proceeds are given to the Safe and Sober program at the local high school, so high school kids are giving tours and participating in the vignettes. The kids were all pretty much Paris Hilton attitude wannabe's (think of her voice saying "that's hot"...these kids were pretty much emulating that). It was kind of funny and sad. If we could have wandered the house on our own, it would have been so much cooler, and at least a little scary. As it is, I spent the entire tour rolling my eyes at these girls wondering if they had enough brain cells to graduate at the end of their high school career. I felt dumber for being in their company, and since I am starting school again, I need all the IQ points I have.

Youth

My mom is in the YW Presidency in her ward, so last night the YM/YW Halloween activity was at out house. There were about 25 youth from 12-18 running around my house for a couple hours. I think I am getting old, because I was seriously annoyed with most of them (and some of these kids I've known since they were in the nursery, which is another old-feeling factor), and they weren't doing anything extremely out of the ordinary. I am sure that I am just not used to having youth around, but for most of the evening, I just wanted to get them out of my way. I was not a happy camper for a couple hours last night. Seriously, I must be getting old. I am turning into that crochety old lady who lives across the street. I am annoying myself. Just watch...I'm going to get into a family ward someday, and be immediately called to YW, which would be the ultimate neener-neener.

I'm IN!

I have the best news! I just received an email from SJSU and I have been accepted to the Master's program for Urban and Regional planning. Things are working out and looking up! So come January-ish, I will be living in the Bay Area and getting into more school debt. Ah, well. I'm so excited right now. We'll see if that feeling lasts. Yea me!

The Age Old Question

I was talking with a friend the other day, and we were discussing the new and old Indiana Jones movies. My friend mentioned that she could never choose between Indiana or Han Solo. She liked them both for various reasons and couldn't really narrow it down. I have always maintained that I would prefer Indiana Jones, but some do make an argument for Han Solo. I know that this has been discussed to death, but since I have a little free time (and my own blog) I thought I might create a poll and perhaps get some "official" results. Vote early, vote often!

Home Again

I'm back at the ranch...after a super long car ride...by myself. I hate driving long distances. I'd rather be a passenger, especially on the long stretches of highway, like the I-5. It is long and boring with nothing of visual interest. I can only bear my own company for so long. On the plus side, I did arrive home with my bed, so I am feeling pretty human again. I love my bed. It is one of my favorite places to be. So comforatble. It was so nice to see the girls again and hang out with the LBC peeps. Thanks for the good times!

First time out

So here it is...still a work in progress, but available for the general public. I need to maintain my position in the blogging world, so I have started my own now that I am out of Bostonian Manor and off into the world. Wish me luck!
